The Future of Libya And Beyond
310 PopE Tianli Zhu
After the downfall of Gaddafi’s regime and the death of the dictator, the future of Libya seems clearer. The former Libyan Rebels are now transformed into Libyan Administration in Chinese government-owned media. But the future of the country which consists of tens of tribes and National Transitional Council remains uncertain. It has been nearly two weeks since the announcement of the liberty of the whole Libya; however, the NTC hasn’t managed to form a formal government. In other words, the nation is still running without a government. How to form and run a legal and democratic government is an urgent problem which NTC faces, for Gaddafi’s 42 years of romantic rule has made Libya nearly a no-government country as well as his killing to the political elites of his time. Worse still, even NTC itself hasn’t reached an agreement on national affairs. How to reach the balance of the power between tribes and cities? How to deal with the diplomatic relations with western nations (such as France) and old friends of Gaddafi (such as China and Russia)? How to deal with the former followers of Gaddafi (such as militants in Sirte)? Due to the unjustified death of Gaddafi, the disagreement in NTC has increased. Democracy may solve some of the problems, but it cannot do everything. To sum up, if the balance is not achieved, there will probably be another civil war in Libya. Hope Libya won’t be a second Somalia.
From Egypt to Libya, form Cote d’Ivoire to South Sudan, we see that democracy doesn’t shorten her paces. Who will be the next one? DPRK? Syria? We shall just wait and see.
